Ayatollah Arafi Travels to Iraq for Mirza Na’ini Congress, Visits Holy Shrines

Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, the Director of Iranian Seminaries, has traveled to Iraq to take part in the International Congress of Mirza Muhammad Hussain Na’ini (RA), one of the most influential jurists and political thinkers of the contemporary Islamic world. During his visit, Ayatollah Arafi is also scheduled to visit the holy shrines in Najaf and Karbala.

Hawzah News Agency- The first segment of the International Congress of Mirza Naini was held in October in Qom, featuring a special message from the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and attended by Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani, prominent scholars, professors, and seminary students. The opening events took place at the Imam Kazim (AS) Seminary in Qom and continued in the holy city of Mashhad.

The congress is jointly organized by the Qom Seminary, the Iraqi Seminaries, and the administrations of the holy shrines. The main international sessions will be held with the participation of distinguished seminary figures from various Islamic countries in Najaf on November 28 and in Karbala on November 30. Scholars will discuss Mirza Naini’s jurisprudential legacy, political philosophy, and his foundational role in the development of constitutional thought within the Islamic world.

A Look at Mirza Naini’s Life and Legacy

Mirza Muhammad Hussain Gharavi Na’ini—widely revered as Mirza Na’ini—was born on 25 Dhu al-Qa’dah 1276 AH in the city of Na'in. He was raised in a noble and deeply spiritual household known for its knowledge, piety, and community leadership. His father, Haj Mirza Abdul Rahim Shaykh al-Islam, and his grandfather, Mirza Muhammad Saeed Shaykh al-Islam, were among the most respected scholars of their time, entrusted by the ruling authorities with the position of Shaykh al-Islami of Na'in.

Though the prestigious role of Shaykh al-Islami was meant to pass to Mirza Na’ini after his father’s death, he declined the position, preferring instead to pursue advanced scholarly studies. The responsibility was subsequently handed to his brother, Mirza Muhammad Isa. Despite his refusal of the official post, Mirza Na’ini remained deeply connected to the scholarly tradition of his family, which was renowned as a center for resolving communal issues and guiding the spiritual life of the city.

Mirza Na’ini later became one of the leading jurists and intellectuals of the Najaf Seminary, earning a prominent place in the history of Islamic thought. His works—particularly in political jurisprudence and the defense of constitutional principles—continue to be studied and referenced across the Muslim world. His teachings and writings remain influential for their insightful approach to governance, justice, and the balance between religious authority and public participation.

A Global Commemoration

Organizers of the congress say this year’s international gatherings in Najaf and Karbala aim to highlight Mirza Na’ini’s enduring intellectual impact, particularly at a time when the Muslim world continues to confront complex political and social challenges. The presence of Ayatollah Arafi and other senior scholars underscores the significance of the event for both Iranian and Iraqi seminaries.
